HAPPINESS BAROMETER

Recent research undertaken by British Scientists has determined that the level of an individual's true level of happiness can in fact be determined mathematically.

Leading Psychologist Ms. Carol Rothwell said the equation was designed to enable people to assess themselves and "to put a figure on their current emotional state of being".

Researchers maintain that the formula is an excellent start, as it addresses the deeper issue that people are responsible for their own happiness, and indicated that money is irrelevant in determining the level of one's happiness, in so far as true happiness comes from within and that is now an established fact.

Researchers tested the formula [ P + (5 x E) + (3 x H) ] on 1,000 people and found that different factors made men and women happy.

For example, four in ten men said sex made life meaningful, while seven in ten women said being with the family was important, and one in ten cited losing weight as vital for ensuring their happiness. Men proved to be more sensitive than women, while a large percentage said romance was important in terms of their level of happiness or contentment with life.

Events such as a promotion positively affected a person's overall happiness with men rating a pay rise or recognition at work as having a positive impact on their state of happiness. Sunny weather was more likely to make women happy while both sexes equally enjoyed a good holiday.

Calculate your level of happiness by answering the following four simple questions:-

Answer the following questions on a scale of 1 - 10. One is "not at all" and 10 is "to a large extent".

Calculating Your Happiness
1 Do you see yourself as someone who is outgoing, energetic, flexible and open to change ?
2 Do you see yourself as someone who has a postive outlook on life, bounces back quickly from setbacks, feels that you, not fate, is driving your life ?
3 Do you feel your basic need in life are met, in relation to personal health, financial subsistence, personal safety, freedom of choice, sense of community or belonging and access to education or knowledge ?
4 Are you able to call on the support of people close to you, immerse yourself in what you're doing, meet your expectations, engage in meaningful activities, that give you a sense of who you are and what you're about ?

Add the score for question one and two together to find the value P (represents "personal characteristics"). The score for question three is value E ("existence"), and question four is value H ("higher order").

If you score 10 for every question, you should have the happiness score of 100. Otherwise; the resulting figure is a percentage of a perfect happiness.
